Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib – The Abode of God’s Spirituality
Sri Harmandir Sahib also called “the abode of god” is widely known by many other names too like Darbar Sahib, which not in a formal manner is called The Golden Temple. Golden temple is a gurudwara situated in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India that is regarded as the highest philosophically spiritual place of Sikhism. This is listed in the 7 Wonders of India List.

History of Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib Amritsar
The temple is named after hari (god), all the Sikhs and people following the Sikh religion come here to pray and value their ardas. Out of all the gurus of Sikh, the fifth guru, Guru Arjan Dev ji , patterned harmandir sahib to be constructed in the middle of the tank which was in the bottom of Amritsar. In addition, after, the construction was done the adi granth was inscribed there which is the holy scripture of Sikhism in the Harmandir sahib.
As made by the sixth guru, Guru hargobind ji , established the akal takht that is the throne of timeless one is also present at harmandir sahib. As Harmandir sahib is considered the abode of God’s spirituality, while the akal takht is the place of God’s sojourn principle.
Basically, the golden temple was built keeping in mind for all the people around the world who could worship here from men, women to each and every person and all the religions to worship god in equality. The four entering gates comprising the golden temple were built to symbolize the Sikh religion’s openness to all the people with different religions to pray.
Almost ten thousand people come and visit the divine shrine for worshipping, and all together take part in the free community kitchen that includes the meal also called the langar without any restrictions, the basic tradition of Sikh gurdwaras that is more of identification. The renovation of the temple took place in the year 1764 with the help of Jassa Singh Ahluwalia and other Sikh misls. During the nineteenth century, the Punjab region was attained by the maharaja Ranjit Singh from the attacks outside, covering the top floors of the temple which constituted seven fifty kilograms of gold, which in turn gives the temple its unique and English name, that is the golden temple again. The harmandir sahib is known as the darbar sahib too, which symbolizes the meaning the sacred audience.
As per the ancient records of the Sikhs, the third guru of the Sikh tradition chose the land that is now Amritsar and home to golden temple. It was at that time called guru da chakk when he asked his one of the disciple Ram Das to search such land to establish a new town comprising of a man made pool in the focal point of the town.

Structure and Building of Golden Temple
Guru ji invited many artists and merchants from various parts of India to come and settle with him. The expansion of Ramdaspur took place when Guru Arjan Dev funded the donations and built the voluntary work. And this how, the town was turned into the city of Amritsar, further turning the pool area into Golden temple complex. Sri harmandir sahib ji is a 67 feet platform in the middle of the tank, owning doors at each direction that is from east, west, north and south.
Darshani Deori an arch stands still at the end of the causeway, which is of ten feet in height and six feets in breadth. The panes of the door are designed in an artistic way opening to a bridge that takes one to the main building of Sri Harmandir sahib ji. Further, the bridge is linked with thirteen feet wide path that is circumambulatory known as the “Pardakshna”. It is across the main entrance and it takes us to the steps of god, spiritually regarded as the “steps of God”.
At har ki pauri , there is constant recitation of Guru granth sahib ji. Technically, the structure of Harmandir sahib is a three floor building in which the front part is facing the bridge while designed with curved arches. In the top of the first floor a four feet in height, a low retaining wall rises on all the directions, which further has Mamttes on the four sides. Exactly on the top of the main hall of the empire is the third floor, which is just a small square, shaped room owning three gates. The continuous reading of guru granth sahib ji takes place there too.
At the high of the room is the low shaped dome called the Gumbaz, which has a lotus petal in reflex at the avertedly base lotus, which in ahead supports the “kalash” which owns a gorgeous “chhatri” in the end. The architecture of the golden temple recognizes a courtesy between the Hindu Muslim arts of construction, which is highly recognized as the great infrastructure of India. It is frequently referred that the beautiful artwork has created an independent Sikh school of art structure in the ancient art of India.
Some of the unique facts about the temple are as follows:
- The upper head of the temple is entirely made up of gold, which lightens the beauty of the temple.
- The temple is around a lake that is a manmade lake environs the temple that has various kinds of fishes inside it.
- In the beginning, the temple was not built with gold, it was until the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, when the temple was refreshed and turned into this beauty as it is seen today.
- Before the temple building was set up here, the first guru of the Sikh tradition that is Guru Nanak dev ji used to meditate here at this place.
- The lake surrounding the temple is called the “amrit sarovar” whose meaning is name is the “poor of holy nectar”.
- The temple is regarded sacred than all other religious sites because thirty five percent of the pilgrims visiting the temple are from other religion instead of Sikhism.
