At approx. 9000 meters above the sea level, Mount Everest is the tallest and most prominent mountain in the world. This range widely stretches across six countries: China, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Afghanistan. About 60 million years old mountain range, this summit is the border of Nepal to its south and China to its north, located in Mahalangur mountain range.
Its massif includes neighboring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m; Nuptse, 7,855 m and Changtse, 7,580 m. Studies and findings on Everest since the late 1990s indicate that the range continues to move a few inches towards the northeast and rise a fraction of an inch each year. This Mountain is listed in the 7 natural wonders of the world.

Referred to as the goddess of the sky, this range was discovered by the local, indigenous villagers in 1841. It was first named as Peak 15 (XV). Later in 1856, it was named as Mount Everest, after Sir George Everest who led a survey and identified these mountainous range for the western world. Also, he was the British surveyor general of India from 1830 to 1843.
Mount Everest, as it is named, is derived from Sanskrit language. It is named differently in other countries such as Sagarmatha meaning “Peak of Heaven” in Nepal, Chomolungma as “Goddess of the Valley” in Tibet, Zhumulangma Feng as “Goddess Mother” in China.

The snow-white color of the mountains is acquired from the glaciers which cover the slopes of Everest to its base. Individual glaciers edging the range are the Kangshung Glacier to the east; the East, Central, and West Rongbuk (Rongpu) glaciers to the north and northwest; the Pumori Glacier to the northwest; and the Khumbu Glacier to the west and south. It is this glacial coverage which gives the serene face value and eruptious action value to these flake-filled ranges. This glacial action has been the primary reason behind the heavy and constant erosion of Everest and the other high Himalayan peaks. Despite of this never-ending erosion of these massive ranges, it still continues to remain the tallest mountain in the world and proudly in the seven natural wonders of the list.

Mount Everest if fantasized by many climbers, some of them being highly experienced mountaineers. People around the world climb Mt. Everest in almost 18 different climbing routes. In a time span of 42 days, one can dare to reach to the summit with 66% of less oxygen in each breath. So the climbers make use of spikes on their boots (crampons), nylon ropes which ease the journey of climbing, ice axes to prevent a fall, thick puffy suits filled with feathers to retain heat in their bodies. And the source of motivation for them: food is lots of noodles and rice.

The first ones to make their landmark on the 2900 m long summit were Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and his Sherpa Tensing Norgay from Nepal. They reached the summit on the historic day of May 29, 1953, at around 11:30 a.m. and descended immediately after burying a small cross and some candies, just in case their descendants crave for food reaching the summit. How ironic…!!
The journey is hampered due to many factors: negligible oxygen content, heavy scorching winds, and sudden landslides, unexpected climatic changes even with the advancements made in equipment, transportation, wireless communications, and weather predictions. Owing to these natural challenges, death toll has been constantly rising but the strength and vigor has been such that people have never really stopped attempting. Thus giving us tales of their extraordinary and sensational feats in the form of biographies, documentaries and movies, inspiring us and motivating to work harder
