Rio de Janeiro Harbour is one of the most beautiful creations of God and all included in list of seven natural wonders of the world. It is the largest harbour based on the volume of water. Thus being termed as one of the seven natural wonders on the earth. On an addition, the mouth of this harbour is unique in its own way resembling more of a river than a bay which contributes to the name given to Rio, ‘River of January’.
Owing to its sublime settings, lush green surroundings, hip-hop carnival celebrations, people have admired it so much that it is said ‘God created the world in six days but on the seventh, he focused on Rio’. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful natural harbours.

The Bay of Rio de Janeiro is named Guanabara Bay by the natives of Rio, ‘the Tamoio’ which means “Arm of the Sea”. Concalo Coelho, a Portuguese seafarer, along with his fleet took three months to sail from Lisbon, Portugal, to a new world.

During his journey, his ships reached a shore side surrounded by huge Rocky Mountains that amazed the European explorers. It was then that he first landed on the harbour on January 1, 1502. The bay flows lavishly in the city of Rio, the second largest city of the world and former capital of Brazil.

The city and the harbour are well known for their geological and scenic beauty. The Harbor is bordered by stunning granite Monolith Mountains, the famous ones being the Sugar Loaf Mountain at 1,296 feet, the hills of Tijuca at 3,350 feet, and The Corcovado Peak at 2,310 feet. The world famous statue of Christ-the redeemer (38m) stands at the peak of the Corcovado mountain (700-metre). The Sugarloaf summit, accessible by a cable car system, gives the visitors a chance to get a 360-degree view of the famous harbour and the natural wonder of this world.
This natural harbor was formed by the continuous erosion of the rocky coastline by Atlantic Ocean. Visitors will also relish the experience of numerous islands amounting to 130 in number, which includes the Governor’s island, Fundao and Snakes Island. The cool breezy months of September and October are the ones to visit the Harbour. The weather is fairly nice and humidity has still not set in. Plus the balneario beaches are free for everyone, thus attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world. One of the most popular attraction is the celebrations of Cordão do Bola Preta, held in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.It holds the record of being attended by as many as five lakh people in just a single day.

In 1932 the great English geologist and naturalist, Charles Darwin, visited the harbor. He was amazed by its beauty and charm and wrote about the bay: the location seemed almost unreal, like some kind of immense theatrical stage.
