Why Does Sustainable Fashion Matter?

Someone somewhere is paying a cost for your fast fashion.

Hurtling towards breaching the limit of our planet has made sustainability an increasing and important point of discussion. Fashion and textile is the second most polluting industry after oil and gas. Sustainable fashion is the only choice that we can all make to help address the growing and significant issue.

Fast fashion is ruling the world. Fast Fashion means fashionable garments designed for short time usage and are manufactured using chemicals and artificial fabrics. These clothes are fashionable, trending and cheap but cannot last long and at last, we have the only option to throw them away that leads to pollution.

Fashion is driven by consumer choices, so collectively we can signal to the fashion industry that we not only want this revolution but we don’t want to wait for it. You can be part of this movement by being conscious of what you buy, who you buy it from, and how often you buy clothes.

What is the impact of non-sustainable fashion?

Figures from 2015 show that 97% of new material is used for making clothes with only 3% coming from recycling. That is about 98 million tonnes of inputs a year into the textile industry – from oil to produce synthetic fibers, fertilizers to grow cotton, all the chemicals needed to dye and finish fabric. This production process also uses around 93 billion cubic meters of water annually and often adds to the challenges faced in water-scarce regions. Additionally, in 2015, textile production produced more CO2 emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined, adding 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere.

Why Is Sustainable Fashion Important?

  1. It provides us with an alternative to fast fashion
  2. Hemp is great for the skin
  3. Help us detox our lives
  4. It generates less waste and takes care of the environment
  5. Help us value our wardrobe

How to shift towards Sustainable Fashion

  • When buying new, look for ethical clothing

Investing in ethical handmade and handspun clothing is the best way to move towards sustainability. Opt for a sustainable brand that ensures you of naturally dyed products with the best quality. Khadi Cotton clothes are the best example of slow fashion. Khadi dress material is versatile, durable, evergreen, and Eco-friendly clothing outfits that are also available in fashionable and trending designs. So choosing ethical eco-friendly clothes is the next fashion of the century.

  • Create a capsule wardrobe

Getting rid of the (mostly difficult) decision of what clothes to wear every morning is a healthy way to create space in the mind for better and more important decisions. This is what capsule wardrobes do! Such wardrobes contain only superior-quality and much-preferred things that are worn exclusively.

  • Pick secondhand

Since fast fashion seasons keep changing every other week, new clothes are being produced faster than it takes to understand this sentence. Purchasing second hand is a wise way of reducing clothing footprints.

  • Buy only what you need

The majority of us are guilty of purchasing more things than we actually require. But refusing a lifestyle of over-consumption is all about accepting and appreciating what we already have.
